Annual General Meeting

The 2024 AGM of the Hull Natural History Society will be held in Teaching Room 5 at the Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull. The AGM will be followed by a few presentations.

Spurn

Hopefully there will be some early migrants about. Meet at the car park opposite the new Yorkshire Wildlife Trust visitor centre. The car park is free to YWT members if you display your membership card in the windscreen.

Hull is again taking part in the challenge which involves recording plants and animals over a four-day period within the city boundary.

Molescroft Grange Farm

A farm estate where various efforts have been made to encourage wildlife. We have been asked to have a look at what is there. Note the earlier start time. Parking is available outside the reception area.

Wood Lane, Cottingham

Meet at the junction of Wood Lane with Priory Road. There is some parking in the layby nearby or in Priory Woods Cemetery.

Forge Valley

A joint trip with Ryedale Naturalists to explore the eastern side of Forge Valley. Meet in the Greengate car park. Take a right turn towards Scalby at the top of Forge Valley and the car park is on the right.

Broomfleet Washlands

Meet at the junction of Common Road and Carr Lane to walk down to the site, or there is limited parking on the site itself for those with strong suspension on their vehicle.

Molescroft Wildlife Network

A trip to look at three sites in the Molescroft Wildlife Network and possibly take a walk along the beginning of the Hudson Way. Meet at the car park at the end of Thurlow Avenue.

Howden Marsh & Hive

A visit to Howden Marsh nature reserve followed by a second look at the fields at Hive before they are mown. Meet in St John's Street where there should be some parking.

Kirkburn Church

The area around Kirkburn features numerous springs which are a contender for the source of the River Hull. Park on Main Street and meet at the entrance to the churchyard.

Anlaby House Grounds

A chance to see this small piece of woodland before encroaching development wipes it out. Meet at the entrance on Beverley Road, Anlaby. Parking is allowed, but the road is busy so Cape Drive is an alternative.

Jack Kaye Walk

A look at urban nature along Jack Kaye Walk, the old railway coal siding and the playing fields. Park in Ella Street.

Mere Sands Wood LWT reserve

An extensive Lancashire Wildlife Trust reserve with a variety of habitats and a cafe. Park on site, £4 fee.

Freshfield Dune Heath LWT reserve

Another LWT reserve with coastal heath and woodland leading to Ainsdale Dunes National Nature Reserve. Park at the end of West Lane and walk to the reserve.

Lunt Meadows LWT Reserve

A wetland nature reserve cum flood storage reservoir. Park on site, entrance via Lunt Road.

Snuff Mill Lane, Cottingham

Meet at the car park at the entrance to Snuff Mill Lane, off Bricknell Avenue.

Skerne Wetlands

Meet in the small car park on the reserve. To get to the car park take the track off the Skerne to Wansford road past Church Farm. Follow this over the potholes as far as a windbreak of trees then turn right.

Withow Mere, Skipsea

Meet at Mr Moo's Ice Cream Parlour. As we are using their car park, please buy some refreshments or arrive early and treat yourself to lunch.

Noddle Hill Way Nature Reserve

Meet in the Noddle Hill playground car park which has a less aggressive access road compared to the usual one. The reserve is a short walk across the playing fields.

Priory Fields and Wood Lane

Meet at the lay-by on Priory Road. This is also the YNU joint meeting for VC61.

Dumble Farm, Arram

We visited the farm in May last year so this time we hope to see some different flora as well as any progress the owners have made in their conservation measures. Park on the grass outside the farm near the brick-arched barn.

Castlehill Aquagreen

As a result of the new aquagreen there is now a large area that is publicly accessible. Meet where the Hornsea Rail Trail crosses Kestrel Avenue. Park in Foxholme Road.

D S T Leconfield

The Defence School of Transport Conservation Group are running a Bioblitz weekend. Some of our members will be setting moth traps on the Saturday evening so on the Sunday morning we can have a look at the catch before having a walk around some part of this very large area.

Riverside Walkway, North Ferriby

Meet outside the café down Church Road.

Loglands Nature Reserve, Longhill

Meet at the car park at the far end of East Carr Road, Hull.

Wilsthorpe & Fraisthorpe

Meet at the Bridlington park and ride car park which has an all-day charge of £5.50. We will then walk south along the coast.

Redcliff Sands & Long Plantation

Meet at the car park next to the Humber at the southern end of Humber Road.The tide should be low enough to walk to Redcliff Sands.

Castle Hill Hospital grounds

Meet on Main Street near the crematorium where there is parking. We will then walk approximately half a mile to the hospital entrance.

Winestead Drain

Meet at Outstray Farm for a walk along the drain past the shell beach to the Meridian.

The planning meeting will be held in Teaching Room 6 at the Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull. Bring some ideas for venues for our meetings next year.

River Hull

Meet in the car park at Ennerdale Leisure Centre. We will then follow the banks of the River Hull as closely as possible as far as the Humber, returning to Ennerdale by bus.

Flies Undone

An illustrated talk by Derek Whiteley of the YNU which is intended to inspire general naturalists to become involved in the identification and recording of flies. The talk will be held in Lecture Room 13 at the Wilberforce Building, University of Hull.
